THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF INFORMATION AND RECORDS MANAGEMENT: FROM TRADITION TO THE FUTURE: COMMEMORATING ADNAN ÖTÜKEN AND TURKISH LIBRARIANSHIP IN THE REPUBLIC PERIOD 50 YEARS SINCE HIS DEATH

The International Symposium of Information and Records Management from Tradition to the Future is realised through the collaboration of the Departments of Information and Records Management of Bartın University, Çankırı Karatekin University, and Kastamonu University. The symposium’s theme is: “ FROM TRADITION TO THE FUTURE: COMMEMORATING ADNAN ÖTÜKEN AND TURKISH LIBRARIANSHIP IN THE REPUBLIC PERIOD 50 YEARS SINCE HIS DEATH. The symposium will take place online on 26-28 May 2022 and will be hosted by the Information and Records Management Department of Bartın Unıversity.

It is important to uncover the lives of pioneers in every profession, the difficulties they have experienced in the name of the profession and their contributions to the advancement of their profession for providing great benefits for the development of the professions. Examining the lives and services of professionals who lived in the past and left their marks also provides benefits for understanding and interpreting the current situation of the profession. Moreover, studies and activities that deal with the lives and services of pioneering personalities in any profession are also highly important for professional staff working in that field in terms of being inspired by the experiences and services of pioneers.

Adnan Ötüken is one of the most important personalities who can be considered as a pioneer in the field of librarianship in Turkey. Ötüken, who was sent to Germany to receive librarianship education in the first years of the Republic Period, has given important services to the librarianship, both theoretically and practically, after returning to Turkey. The greatest service Ötüken has given to the Turkish cultural and librarianship life is undoubtedly his pioneering in the establishment of the National Library. The founder of the National Library whose foundation was laid in 1946 and gained an official identity in 1950, Adnan Ötüken, also made great efforts in the development of the library. Adnan Ötüken is a professional leader who has made significant contributions to the standardization of technical services in the field of librarianship in Turkey with the librarianship courses ha has opened. Qualified librarians who will undertake duties in important libraries of Turkey have been trained in these courses. Adnan Ötüken also made great efforts to open the first Information and Records Management Department in Turkey. It is possible to see important traces of Adnan Ötüken both in establishment and academic activities of Ankara University Information and Records Management Department. It should not be forgotten that Ötüken’s pioneering role of the establishment of the Turkish Librarians’ Association, the first professional association of librarianship, and in publication of our long-established professional journal, the Turkish Librarians’ Association Bulletin (Turkish Librarianship), and its long-term survival.

At the organization of “The 1st International Symposium of Information and Records Management from Tradition to the Future: On the 50th Jubilee of His Death, Adnan Ötüken, and Turkish Librarianship in the Republic Period”, it will be considered that Adnan Ötüken (b.1911-d.1972), who played a leading role in the institutionalization of librarianship as a profession, gaining an academic identity and association, and who left important and deep traces in almost every field of Turkish librarianship, made great contribution to the development of Turkish librarianship. In addition, the development of librarianship in the Republic Period of Turkey with its all dimensions will be another focus of the symposium. Beside this, other studies in the Field of Information and Records Management will also be included in the symposium.
